    Nature Overcomes Empty Nature Overcomes

Post by Laura Pinesdottir Sun Dec 14, 2014 7:19 pm

    Job Info:
Laura wandered around the streets of Pewter City, her companion Bloom following directly behind her. There was tension in the air for several reasons, all of them centered directly around the mute teenager. The first reason was due to Laura's nerves; while the city was far more open than the academy, it was still far more claustrophobic than the forest. Secondly, and speaking of the forest, it was just a stone's throw away from Pewter, and her original hometown was just past there; being so close meant that there was always the chance that somebody would recognize her.

Finally, the townspeople were constantly glaring at Bloom, and by extension Laura; the monsters of the Viridian Forest had reportedly been attacking people who ventured outside of the city gates, so there was high anti-monster sentiment in the city itself. Personally, Laura thought that was all crap; the monsters had been peaceful before Armageddon, so there was no reason to dislike the monsters when you could blame Armageddon instead. Still, people wanted something to lash out at, so the monsters were taking the blame. It broke her heart.

Laura's thoughts came to an end as she reached the building she had been looking for: The Passport Center.

The interior of the buildings were very similar to the exterior - cracks running through the walls that were hastily covered up, rubble everywhere, and plants (ivy especially) growing all over. The plants were very uplifting to Laura; she knew that the residents of the city were trying their hardest to get rid of the things, having seen several teams tearing strands of ivy off of the sides of several buildings, but they persisted and even thrived despite all of the humans' efforts. Laura had seen firsthand the effects of some foolish humans who believed that they could bend nature to their will, and knew that all too often they succeeded - to the detriment of everything else around them. Seeing them fail to eradicate the ivy gave Laura hope that one day they might give up and learn to live alongside nature, just like Laura did.

With a start, Laura realized that she had been too lost in thought to remember to join the line. She hurriedly joined the line at the back, prepared for a long wait.

Upon closer inspection, the line was much shorter than Laura had expected. She had always been told that Passport Centers were bustling, claustrophobic centers where one stood in line for hours just to get a simple piece of cardboard, but that wasn't so. The line was only halfway to the door, and the people here were remarkably subdued, not that Laura could blame them. They were probably still reeling from Armageddon; after all, it had only been a short time since the world they had known had ended and they had entered Pandora.

The transition had been remarkably easy for Laura, as she had hated her then-current life at the time of Armageddon, but she could see how some people would want to cling to and/or mourn the loss of their world. They needed somebody who could bring them out of this slump, to turn a dead world into one that was not-so-dead. Certainly not Laura, though. Who would trust a tiny, mute girl who befriended monsters to lead them?

It took some time, but Laura eventually reached the front of the line and approached the young man manning the only booth. The man stared at the shade of Bloom hovering beside Laura for a while before belatedly acknowledging the girl's approach. "Fill this out, please," the boy said, handing her a sheet of paper. "Then get out. You're making everybody nervous."

Laura filled out the paper dutifully while Bloom observed the rest of the room, noticing the stares he was still getting. Within a few minutes, Laura had handed back the sheet to the boy, whose eyes widened slightly as he read the paper. "Pinesdottir?" He said, turning to the computer. "That's a Viridian name, I think, but I can't remember what the family was like for the life of me. Ah, well." He typed out the info into the computer quickly, almost shoving the passport into Laura. "Here's the passport. Enjoy your stay elsewhere."
Laura bowed politely and made her way out of the room quickly.

Laura let out a silent sigh of relief as she left the building. Her heart had caught in her throat when he had mentioned her name, but it looked like she was safe...this time. She looked at the ID briefly before stuffing it into her pocket; the more people who saw that name, the more likely it was she'd be captured and sent somewhere like the Academy. She would only show it when she absolutely needed to.

As she walked through the city towards the exit, she noticed a team of men trying to pry ivy off of one of the taller buildings. One of the men fell off as his grip on the ivy slipped, landing headfirst on the cobble path below. It was a disgusting sight to see, one that made Laura feel faint, but for some reason she felt like smiling; even though it was a tragedy, maybe it would force them to leave the plants alone. They would have to learn that, no matter the odds, nature overcomes.
