Name: Laura Pinesdottir
Nickname: Laura
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Age: 17
Birthday: December 12th
Sexuality: Straight
Unique Characteristics: Nothing physically, but she is mute. She has a necklace with her name engraved on it, so people can know her name.
Personality: Laura definitely is not the most imposing figure in a crowd; indeed, she tends to fade into the background more often than not. Her muteness certainly doesn’t help matters; without a way to make herself heard or a way to grab people’s attention, she suffers from a chronic lack of presence. Most of the time, her pet monsters and her friend/fellow escapee Jia are the only ones who pay any attention to her; she has a very close relationship with both of those parties, and treats them with more care than she does her own life.
Speaking of her own life, due to her treatment at the school for the disabled and how her family treated her before then, Laura doesn’t have much of a sense of self-worth. She gladly gives away most valuables she comes across, with the mindset that anybody would be able to use the things she finds better than her; this has made her into a kind of paragon of selflessness, albeit for a very self-deprecating reason. The only things she won’t give away are either things that she cherishes (like her monster storage units, or the necklace with her name on it that Jia gave her), or things that she absolutely needs to survive (clothes, food for herself or her monsters, ect). She also gives away paintings, but for a different reason: She is a spectacularly gifted painter, so when she is short on food or her clothes get torn, she’ll do some street painting with a collapsible easel and sell those to get more supplies.
One of the most remarkable things about Laura is her almost supernatural connection she has to the creatures of not just the Kanto Kingdom where she was born and raised, but with nonhuman beasts all over the world of Pandora. She may not be able to speak and make herself understood by humans, but the beasts certainly understand her; even at first glance, she can create a connection between herself and the creature, allowing them to bond. With enough time spent together, she and the creatures can be completely attuned with one another, almost as if their two minds become one; this is how she can become a successful Monster Trainer, despite having no voice to give commands.
With very little presence, Laura often finds herself alone when Jia goes off to do something or other. Usually, she prefers to spend time with her pets when this happens; in a scenario where the pets cannot be let out (in an urban area, for example), she reads. Laura is a voracious reader, capable of devouring page after page of almost any kind of book without getting bored. She only carries one book around with her; however, she participates in a ‘book-barter’ system where she can swap her book for another one with any library, bookstore, or individual in Pandora that is part of the system. Participating in the system requires a special ID, which Laura would rather die than give up.
Laura is very nonconfrontational, preferring to do almost anything other than fight. When her friends are threatened, however, she’ll become almost rabid with anger to protect them. Despite being small and mute, she’s surprisingly tough; especially when in one of her rages, she seems to almost ignore pain. She’s not the best leader, since her inability to speak is an obvious handicap; she follows well, however, since she only listens.
Likes:
-Forests. In direct contrast with her friend Jia’s dislike of them, Laura loves the forests; she loves the crisp clean air and relative silence of it, as well as reminding her of her origins (hence the name Pinesdottir).
-Spending time with her friends. As a mute boarding school escapee, Laura has precious few people she can truly trust. Spending time with these people (Jia and both girls’ monsters) is one of the best things for Laura, and is one of the only times she truly relaxes.
-Books. As stated earlier, Laura loves to participate in the ‘Book-Barter’ program and is a voracious reader, loving every genre.
Dislikes:
-Noisy Places. Laura dislikes noise, feeling like it diminishes her already nonexistent presence.
-Being separated from her friends. As has been discussed, Laura is very close, borderline clingy, with her pets and Jia. Being separated from one hurts; being separated from all of them would be like cutting off her arm.
-Overly talkative people. Laura has a secret superstition that overly chatty people stole her ability to talk, and as such she gives them the cold shoulder. This does not extend to Jia, as Laura knows that her friend has her own issues.
Motivations:
-Deepening her friendship with her friends.
-Getting over her lack of presence.
-Becoming not-mute.
Fears/Disgusts:
-Losing a friend permanently.
-Gaining another disability to go along with her muteness.
-Being caught and sent back to their boarding school.
