Standing in Line

Koth entered the Urban City's Department of International Travel, looking around somewhat nervously. This was his first time interacting with people who weren't Venser or Aknaid, and he was feeling very...anxious, he thought it was called?...about the whole ordeal. The people around him seemed very anxious as well; they could not seem to keep their eyes off of the hulking metal golem, for reasons that he could understand. It wasn't every day that a flaming, 8-foot-tall metal being entered a government building and requested a passport.

Then again, this wasn't an every day activity for Koth, either. The building was definitely not built to hold somebody of Koth's stature; if he stood on his tiptoes, he could scrape the ceiling, and he felt constantly cramped from the small pathways and long lines. He would take it, though; the more passports he acquired, the more places he could explore, and the greater the chance of finding Venser. This was a necessary struggle, one that Koth would make it through not matter what discomforts they decided to visit upon him.

As Koth entered the line, two things struck him. First, it was a very long line; people from all over the city and of all economic classes seemed to have gathered here for the sole purpose of standing in this line to get a passport. Travel must be something that the humans greatly valued, if they were willing to wait this long. Or maybe it was the people they were going to see, like Koth's purpose? Only time would tell. The other thing that struck him was how mechanical and smooth the entire process seemed to be; people stood in line until one of the people at the desk ahead called them over, whereupon they answered a few questions and were given the little scrap of cardboard that would allow them access to other places in the world. It was a simple enough process, and one that Koth would have no problem executing.

Koth spent the majority of his time looking around and observing the various people in the line, trying to figure out each person's place in society based on their behavior. There was one woman not too far ahead of him with several children attached to her; they ran around, jumping and playing like they did not have a care in the world. Koth was somewhat envious of them; they had a parental figure to guide them through the hardships of fitting into human society. Koth had had Venser, but he was gone now; it was up to Koth to figure out the rest of the path. One of the children, a babe in the woman's hands that could have been no older than a year, noticed Koth staring; it raised a hand towards him and began to babble something, but the woman shushed it and it fell silent once more. Koth continued his silent vigil, watching the people in the line.

Eventually, Koth reached the front of the line and was called over by one of the attendants. "...Hello," the young man behind the desk said with a fake smile plastered across his face; he was obviously unnerved by the golem's fearsome presence. "Can I help you?"
Koth cleared his throat (or faked it, anyway; Koth had found that mimicking human mannerisms helped him fit in) and spoke. "Hello. I would like a passport to Kanto." It was the first full sentence he had said to another being; he had practiced for a full day to get it down, and he was rather proud of it. His voice, now that he was using it, was a very gravelly, passionate tone, with a bizarre accent that couldn't be placed since it wasn't from Pandora.
"Sounds good," the man replied as nonchalantly as he could before shuffling through a stack of papers, finally retrieving the needed sheet. "Sign here, as you tell me your full name."
Koth stared at the paper for a short while before extending a gauntlet-ed fist and lightly pressing it against the parchment where he was supposed to sign. The resulting singe was unmistakably Koth's gauntlet; it was his own form of signature, since he couldn't hold a pen. "My name...is Koth. Koth...Hammerborn." Hammerborn had been his own creation of a last name; since he was made in a forge, it was only fitting.
"Well, Koth, here's your passport," the man said, handing the golem a small passport with his name and the word "Kanto" written on it. "Don't lose it."
"I will not," Koth responded as he turned and left, leaving behind a very confused and agitated young man.

As Koth left the large building, his mind was filled with thoughts. This had been a very productive day; he had learned more about human culture and how their families worked, as well as the knowledge of a fantastic people-watching place in the city. He also had the passport, which would be invaluable in his quest for Venser. As he passed, he saw the poor woman with her children that had been standing in front of him; she was holding up her passport, and all of her kids had bright smiles on their faces. It was a wonderful sight, one that created a strange feeling in Koth's own mind. It made him yearn for Venser, for a parent figure that could show him the world without trial and error. But Venser was missing, and it was up to Koth to find him; as the golem lifted his head and glanced at the towering Urban City Skyline, he knew that his own adventure was just beginning.
