[Solo][D-rank Job] Finding Mr. Cuddles

“Please! Please, has anyone seen my adorable and fluffy black and ginger cat?”

Lexia felt an arm curl around her arm and she froze a little, before looking up at the tall ginger female. “Have you seen a lost cat? Gosh he could be anywhere here!” She cried out, her distress obvious in her voice. Voices murmured around Lex, people rolling their eyes, uttering things about the girl who had lost her mind trying to find the cat. Lexia went to take a step, a small tug to free herself from the girls grip. But the hand didn’t let her go.

“No! You have to find Mr Cuddles! Please! He’s got a specialised diet and if he doesn’t eat by tonight...” The lady raised her hand to her mouth, eyes glistening with tears. Lexia hid her grimace, before nodding. “Alright, alright, calm down. I’ll look for your little cat.”

Lex groaned and rubbed the back of her head, turning to the street which was packed with people. Just how was she meant to find this cat? She began the slow shoulder shoving task of pushing through the crowded street, her eyes looking for this... fluffy black and ginger cat. Lex just hoped that it would prove easy to find.

Over half an hour passed as Lex pushed through the crowded streets, the smells of sweaty men and freshly cooked food caused her stomach both to flip and growl. She sighed again, her eyes catching the sight of movement as a dozen or so cats entered a building from the door which lead into an alleyway. Shortly after they had entered, the door swung shut behind them.

And one was a very VERY fluffy ginger and black cat. Rushing to the street entrance of the building, Lexia pushed her way past a few larger folks to enter it. Instantly she recoiled.

It smelt of curry.

The queue was easy enough for her to barge past, but the cooks and chefs were holding her up. She had attempted several times to assure them that she was being honest and was after the group of cats that slunk in the back entrance. They, on the other hand, were adamant that she was lying and were shouting at her to leave the kitchen. The chiefs called the manager and they came down, about to throw Lexia out of the building. Lex shook her head, her feet remaining firmly planted on the ground. “Someone’s lost cat is out there, you need to let me get to them!” She pleaded for the final time. But the manager wouldn’t change his mind...

That was until a horrible stench came from the prep area. Gagging and choking, the manager half threw Lexia aside, shouting for people to evacuate the building, the smell so bad that it made several of the people there nauseous.

Even the cats wouldn’t stand by the stench and they bolted past Lex, trying to get to fresh air. Only to faint at the front door. Lexia felt her stomach flip, almost causing her to throw up from the rancid smell in the air. Holding her breath to the best of her abilities, she counted the cats. Then she paled when she realised that the only cat who she didn’t see was the fluffy one that the lady was after...

Lexia continued to hold her breath as the restaurant cleared of all people and she forced her way deeper into the back section of the place. A faint meow came from there, before the sound of bones crunching, the sound of a lapping tongue. Something similar to a deep and rumbling growl came from deep within the area, followed by the loudest fart that Lexia had ever heard. Shivering, she realised that was the cat. The thing that the lady wanted. The creature that caused an entire building to be evacuated. Lexia felt her head slowly grow lighter, lack of oxygen slowly clouding her vision...

A sound of a bell came from just around the corner as a rather pudgy looking cat came around the corner. At the sight of Lexia, it froze for a few moments as she slowly knelt down. Coaxing the cat forward, the fat and happy cat would purr loudly, before wandering back over to the hand which was outstretched to him.

Lexia’s eyes were becoming blurry, the lack of oxygen causing her brain to slow. But inhaling was a death wish! Snatching up the cat when it was close enough, she pulled it close to her as she ran to the backdoor that she knew was there. With her robotic arm, she tried the handle. Thankfully, it was unlocked. Her sight failed more.

The door opened.

Her mouth opened as she gasped in fresh oxygen.

Only for the cat to let loose another fart.

Lexia had never smelt something so disgusting in her life. Her mouth felt like she was eating the natural excretions itself. It was horrible, it even almost felt warm, sticky, the potent scent of the cats fart caused her to stumble to a nearby trash can and hurl. Her vision swam, but the grip of her robotic arm didn’t let the cat go. She stayed still for a few moments, unable to focus her eyesight.

The cat just happily purred in her arm, meowing in delight as Lexia recovered.

It took her some time, but Lexia wandered around the now empty street with the purring cat under her arm. She looked around, trying to find the lady, who she found after at least an hour of searching.

“Oh you found him! My Mr Snuggles!” The lady’s voice called, the sound of her heels clipping on the pavement sounding in her ears. Lexia passed her the cat as quickly as she could, almost eager to rid herself of the feline.“Thank you so much for finding my little dear!” The lady said in appreciation, a happy smile on her face.

“No... problem...” Lexia mumbled, continuing to take in the fresh and crispy clean air. As the reunited cat and owner passed her by, the cat released the deadly gas once more.
