A sigh could be heard. The pair of lips from which the sigh escaped would have got its 23rd sigh escaping from it by the time the last sigh was let out by them. The figure, with a nice, slightly muscular build walked its way towards the academy, which was unfortunately not that far from the town’s central. Heck, it was pretty damn obvious anyway to not be seen from the gates. His casual white shirt and black trousers flapped slightly at the gentle, slow blows of wind.

“Geez..”

The lazy pair of blue eyes looked at the roof as the figure to which the eyes belonged to halted to a stand a few metres from the academy’s building’s doors. Looking around, Gray knew he was already late by the time he arrived, but did not show any signs of giving a damn about it. Sighing yet again, the man took his first steps inside the buildings, later deciding to check the classroom for any ongoing classes; he would not want to get too left out himself.

It was not long after he heard voices coming from a classroom nearby. “Ah, finally.” Gray walked through the empty halls to the classroom, but was surprised at the sudden silence the class gave when he was right in front of the classroom’s door.

Freezing for a few seconds, Gray thought, “Ah, here goes nothing..” Before opening the doors.

“Yo.. I’m late, it seems..” with a plain voice, he greeted.

The seemingly carefree guy scratched his head as he opened the door, the sound shifting the students’ focuses to him for a few minutes after. Walking to the table at the back of the class, Gray sat down, still showing signs of not giving a damn to whatever the kids and the teacher herself would think of him after what just happened. His ignorance just shows.

Venser was busy browsing the various sheets in front of him when a strange, black-haired man threw open the doors to the Academy, announcing his lateness for all the world to see. He then proceeded to stroll through the rows of seats to the back of the class and take a seat in the very back row, seeming uncaring the whole time.

The former Planeswalker raised an eyebrow at the man (who was older than the rest of the class like him, he noted); men like him usually weren't as put together and carefree as they seemed, but time would tell. If anything, Venser was rather impressed with the man; he hadn't tried to sneak in, but had openly admitted to his guilt and had owned up to it. That, if nothing else about him so far, was admirable.

Venser returned to his pages, eventually settling on one technique in particular that he'd like to learn.

Shini looked over the class, continuing a minor explanation on Chakra. "We are all born with an element embedded into our energy." She spoke, pacing in front of the room. She kept her eye on the man in the back, almost interested, yet not at all. He was honest, and that was something she had found appealing in a ninja. However, that made him a horrible candidate for Anbu. She noted it. "Chakra was originally something that belonged to the Shinju. When Princess Kaguya Ōtsutsuki ate the fruit the Shinju bore, she became the first person in history to wield chakra. With her newfound power, she ended all the wars that plagued the lands. Her sons, Hamura and Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, the latter of whom would become the man known as the Sage of the Six Paths, were the first people to be born with chakra." She recited the story from memory. "However, the ten-tails is something even more powerful. For now, it's a god. And the Sage is now... a tree."

The papers on the desks were full of all kind of insane jutsu that none of the students could learn at their level. It was there for them to know what opponents could use. Some sheets had stories, other had instructions. "How many handsigns are there?" she asked.

Earlier on he had attentions all over him, eyes watching him, some irritated, some noting something, and some just.. had to look. He sighed, flipping the sheets of paper the redheaded teacher would have put on the table. Seemed like everyone had 3 each, so Gray just went on and flipped. And read. Things might not as well be as new as they possibly was to the kids, but for him and the other, older looking man, the two might was just reading about something that they had probably seen or be told in minority about.

“How many handsigns are there?”

A question was thrown across the classroom, probably for the whole class to respond to. Gray kept his mouth shut, leaning towards his table, his chin resting on his left hand as the other continued flipping through the sheets. The kids seemed to be excited to answer, but he decided to just go with whatever answers the kids might reply with, shrugging as he did. Shifting his focus back to the sheet, Gray’s eyes widened slightly, very slightly, enough to show three quarter of his circle shaped irises, which previously only showed half of themselves.

“This. Looks good to me.”

When Shini asked how many hand signs there were, Venser's mind immediately popped in the with answer - twelve, one for each Zodiac animal. To be honest, he had known that even before coming here; he had spent the week or so between his recovery and when he started at the Academy frantically learning everything he could about this culture and their strange jutsus. He had discovered both the hand signs and the Zodiac legend separately, then noticed when they referenced one another that they were connected.

Despite knowing the answer, however, Venser did not yell it out loud. He didn't need to, nor did he want to prove his knowledge with words; he would prove it where it counted - in practice. For now, he'd let the kids answer and let them learn on their own. He continued his own private study, as did the other older man who had recently entered the room; eventually, unable to decide which technique he wanted to learn, he closed his eyes and placed his finger on a random line, determined to learn whatever it landed on.

The class sat in silence, absorbing all the material that was before them.

"... This is insane." said a small boy. He tossed his papers in the air and walked out of the room. Shini raised an eyebrow and watched as a few other kids followed. Shini sighed as a few exited. The boy next to Venser smiled and looked at him, "You know how many handsigns there are?" he was cheeky in the way he said it. His eyes closed in amusement, "... There isn't a number."

"CORRECT." Shini pointed at the boy. She almost laughed as she did so. "There are some jutsu that use special unique handsigns. This almost doubles with the "Ten Thousand Halfsigns" technique. Along with that, and other Kekkei Genkais, this could be anythere from 50 handsigns. However, with different knowledge and control, you can use two halves of difference signs, to create an entirely new jutsu." Shini spoke from experience. She knew of certain techniques that were hidden to certain clans.

"So, who wants to practice?"

Gray kept his focus on the interesting piece of paper, which apparently had something that could intrigue him. It was not long after the kids start shouting random numbers a few started to go home. Gray watched as they leave, shrugging. “They’re still kids after all.” Gray thought, looking back through his paper again.

When a little kid gave the right answer, Gray shifted his focus to the kid, and the teacher. The kid looked bright, he wasn’t the typical snot nosed brat like he always meet nowadays.

Gray listened carefully about how some jutsu may require this and that, and how some jutsu may not. That, he just knew, and no wonder some of the ninjas with higher ranks he met with in the village needed no handsigns to activate their jutsus.

“Ah, I see..”

Gray said, nodding a few times slightly.

He put his hand up upon the redheaded teacher’s question, a sign of interest from the seemingly ignorant guy.

Venser had done a good job of hiding his reactions up until now, but it was impossible to hide his surprise at what Shini and the boy next to him had revealed. He looked down at the paper, shaking his head; was the paper itself wrong? After a few minutes of perusing the paper, he concluded that it wasn't lying, it just wasn't telling the whole story; it did say that there were twelve 'basic' hand signs, after all.

Leaning back, Venser took a deep breath; he had to calm down. He was falling into the exact same trap he had when he was first learning regular magic, assuming that everything had a simple formula that could be found. If there was anything the man had learned in his travels, it was that nothing was formulaic; there may be a skeleton, sure, but as long as it stayed within that skeleton, just about anything was possible. Not just that, but Venser hadn't really learned enough about this world to even see the skeleton; he shouldn't be assuming anything, especially when it pertained to this bizarre system of fighting.

Venser snapped back into reality just in time to hear Shini asking who wanted to practice. His resolve re-affirmed and his mind calmed, the former Planeswalker raised his hand.

Shini smiled at her two participants. The other kids looked at each other and some figured it out. But it seemed the elder students have not. "Venser, Gray. You two will be partners." She smiled as the kids chose a partner. It was perfect, the class was an equal number of students. This was the end of the lesson. The next session would be advanced training. The Chunin exams. "You will spar and fight with your partner. Perfect your jutsu. Later, I will resume this lesson..." She grinned and glanced out the window, "But I'm the Kuraikage too. Class is dismissed!" She quickly brought her hands to the center in front of her chest. Her fingers bent and shaped. "Have fun~!"

And with that, she vanished.

Gray stood there, idle for a few seconds. He had lifted his hand up earlier when the redhead teacher asked about whoever was interested to get the training started. Surprisingly, he was. Gray stared out of the window, pretty much thinking about whatever the heck he would need to do next.

The kids, in the other hand, started to choose their partner, where sometimes unnecessary stereotypes can be seen. Racism, too. Like, how some white brat would not want to choose a black skinned brat as his partner just because.. well, cause he was black. Dammit people. Even the children.. Geez. What is wrong with this generation? Gray had such thought in his mind, as he watched how the class changed moods from time to time. There were times that it got serious, and there were times when someone would just climb on the table and shout something like, LET’S GET NAKED! or sometimes, the kids would just seem like they wanted to go exploring with the Dora.

Gray sighed, a bit surprised when the redhead announced him and this.. Verner guy as his partner. “So.. Old man there is my partner..” Gray looked at the adult male, which, including him, are the only two participants that had reached adolescence. After remarking about how she was also the Kuraikage, the woman disappeared. Pretty much left the guy hanging.

Gray walked up to Venser, took a chair from another table, and dragged it next to Venser’s table. He sat on it after, looking a bit clueless.

“So, yo. Gray’s the name. Tacos’ are the norm. Now what do we do..??”

Venser watched intently as Shini spoke, glancing over briefly to the other older student, the one that was late, when the Kuraikage mentioned that the two of them were going to be partners. He didn't know much about the dark blue-haired man; from his lateness and nonchalance at said lateness, he seemed to be a straightforward, laid back fellow. Although Venser wasn't that kind of person, he was certainly able to appreciate them; they often provided a unique angle on whatever problem the group faced, creating some bizarre and truly spectacular solutions to seemingly impassable problems. Venser would prefer one of them to be his partner over most other kinds of people, which is why he smiled as the other man brought his chair over to the table.

“So, yo. Gray’s the name. Tacos’ are the norm. Now what do we do..??”

Venser's eye twitched slightly as the other man introduced himself. Tacos? Why in the world would tacos be the norm for him? And why would he want that to be the first thing his partner knew about him besides his name? Well, no matter. As long as he wasn't an imbecile, this would work out fine. Venser looked at Gray, making sure to not overwhelm his partner with the former Planeswalker's trademark intense stare. Instead, he responded to Gray. "My name's Venser. Nice to meet you. As to what we're supposed to do..." he said, standing up and flexing somewhat, "I think we're supposed to test out our new Jutsu and spar."
